    West Michigan Junior Strings

Announces Openings for Cello and Violin

West Michigan Junior Strings registration for winter classes is now open and will run through January 11, 2017.

Classes are open to students from 4 years old through high school who wish to study violin or cello. Classes start the week of January 9. Locations available are the White Lake area, Hart Middle School, and the Ludington Arts Center.

Since 2009, the West Michigan Junior Strings has offered violin and cello instruction to students ages 4 to 18, using a creative blend of the Suzuki Method and traditional string pedagogy. It has grown into a program serving students in over three counties with highly-skilled and committed faculty who are dedicated to fostering Suzuki’s vision that “every child can.” Dr. Suzuki's philosophy embraces the idea that all children are born with musical ability which can be nurtured at an early age through their environment, listening, imitation, and by working closely with a parent at home.

Focusing on creating a musically-nurturing environment, the Junior Strings reaches out to communities that have no existing string programs in the public schools. Students and parents meet with their instructor once a week for private lessons and monthly group classes, showcasing all progress at the end of the semester with a combined recital.

The West Michigan Junior Strings is a program of the Arts Council of White Lake. For more information or to register, please contact Director Sondra Cross at 231-329-3056. All registration materials are available online at www.artswhitelake.org.

If you don't know Billy's music or what he has been though to keep playing his guitar you should not miss this show! Acoustic guitar that defies gravity...and an inspirational story that has lifted up audiences across the world.

Billy McLaughlin is recognized internationally as a world-class guitarist, composer and inspirational performer who has appeared on Billboard’s TopTen Chart. Previously signed to Virgin Records’ Narada label, McLaughlin has 14 CD releases, 3 National Campus Entertainer of the Year Awards*, 5 Minnesota Music Awards and his decades of national concert touring earned him the Hall of Fame Achievement Award*.

But in 1999 McLaughlin vanished from sight as his career crumbled due to a little-known neuro-muscular disorder called Focal Dystonia. After suffering several years without a cure, he embarked on an unlikely attempt to regain his career by re-learning his instrument left-handed. His remarkable comeback is captured in the documentary film Changing Keys (airing on PBS 2010) and a concert film called Coming Back Alive featuring McLaughlin with string orchestra and a reunion of his longtime rock band.

Now serving as Ambassador for Awareness for the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, McLaughlin is the winner of the 2010 Public Leadership in Neurology Award** whose previous winners include Paul Allen, Julie Andrews, Leon Fleischer and Michael J. Fox.

McLaughlin has resumed an international schedule of concert appearances and keynote speaking. He resides in his home state of Minnesota where he is  proudly raising two boys.
